Ted and Pat Smith were warm friends of The University of Manchester. They married in March 1958, and Ted came to Manchester ten years later as a Professor of Metallurgy. During his 20 years of service, Ted was a senior leader of the Department of Materials and an influential teacher to many students. Pat provided considerable support to Ted’s career, and they travelled extensively together. Ted formally retired in 1988, but they remained close friends of Manchester throughout their lives.
When Ted and Pat passed away, they left a legacy to the University to support undergraduates in engineering or science, and particularly wanted to help students studying in the field of materials science. The Ted and Pat Smith Scholarship is a merit-based award available to students who are entering Year 1 of a science or engineering degree, and from a widening participation background.
